A Quick Method that Will Help You Succeed with Your Homework Assignments

Research has clearly shown that homework is a valuable instructional tool that helps students achieve greater academic success, especially in the upper levels in high school and in college. In lower grades, homework builds a foundation of positive work attitudes towards schoolwork and study.

Here is a quick method that will help you succeed with your homework assignments so you get the academic grades and recognition you deserve:

Learn Consistency: It’s good to build a routine and stick to it. One of the first things you can do to increase your chances of homework success is to set a time to do your homework and to follow it every day. Be sure you allow yourself some time to take a break and refresh. You should also look towards making a space to do all your work at. Sitting down in front of your workspace will encourage you to start you work more easily.

Get Rid of Distractions: It goes without saying that trying to do homework in front of a television or with music blaring in the background will certainly get in the way of study time. So it’s important to think ahead and get rid of distractions before setting down to do your work. There are a number of distractions outside of the two mentioned above (e.g., food or the internet), so be sure to make a list of anything that might steal your focus.

Aim for Independence: Study groups and online assistance can be great in helping you get through some of the more difficult assignments or problem sets. But it’s important that you make it a point to try and first get through your assignment independently. If you find a portion of your homework hard, skip it and come back to it later. Perhaps working on other parts will help refresh your mind and provide you with the tools you need to complete all of your work.

Don’t Try to Be Perfect: Striving to get things right is a great quality that is clearly linked to success, however, make sure you understand that it’s difficult and often impossible to be perfect. Don’t let self-criticism keep you from getting through your assignments. Set a specific time aside to complete your assignments and stick with your schedule. Getting into a routine will improve your scores, so as long as you don’t get bogged down at trying to be perfect.

Question Your Resistance: If after trying the above methods you are still having trouble focusing and completing your work, you might want to look into reasons behind your resistance. Perhaps your homework assignments are too difficult or perhaps they are too challenging. Whichever the case, if you find yourself having trouble it’s a good idea to speak with your instructor to learn about what options you may have.
